THE NATIONAL COACHING CERTIFICATION PROGRAM (NCCP)
Orienteering Canada is an active partner with the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) and their NCCP. We are constantly upgrading and extending our NCCP course material, workshop exercises, and certification processes for our orienteering coaches.
Orienteers, like participants in every sport, typically get started in coaching by helping existing coaches in a sport-delivery organization with the practice set-up, activity management, and basic instruction of young athletes. These activities often evolve into a more active role in the planning and delivery of practice sessions and the support of the organization's coaching program.
While many aspects of coaching are intuitive and easily learned through observation and practice, most sport organizations insist on some level of formal training before hiring or accepting coaches into their programs.
Over the last several years, Orienteering Canada has developed two new NCCP-based programs for the training and certification of our coaches. Scroll down for more information about these programs and other training opportunities from the CAC.
COMMUNITY SPORT COACH
Community Sport Coaches are parents, teachers, group leaders, and O-club members. They are not necessarily experienced orienteers but they have a desire to contribute towards the development of new athletes (of all ages) in our sport.
For more information,
Prospective Comp-Intro Coaches are experienced orienteers who wish to further develop their coaching skills. Orienteering Canada has aligned the curriculum for the training of Comp-Intro coaches with young athletes in the Train to Train stages of the Long Term Athlete Development Model. (LTAD)
For more information,
Coach Developers deliver the training programs (e.g. facilitate workshops) and perform the evaluation tasks towards the certification of our Community Sport and Competition Stream coaches. The CAC and Orienteering Canada provide the generic and O-specific training for the Coach Developers.
If you are an experienced coach and can help us with the growth of our coaching resources,
THE COACHING ASSOCIATION OF CANADA
The CAC, with funding from Sports Canada, provides consultation and financial support to more than 70 Olympic and non-Olympic sports towards the training and certification of their coaches.
Orienteering Canada gratefully continues to benefit from the resources and expertise provided by the CAC.
Their website is the gateway to all their services and coaching literature.

As such, it is a core resource for the development of our coaching programs.

The CAC supports an on-line database of Coaches and Coach Developers called The Locker.
The partner sports organizations, like Orienteering, maintain the training, certification, and Professional Development records.
Coaches can review their training and certification data and request a transcript for employment opportunities.
